Who looks after your data
whatiscysticacne.com is a small independent site, and it is responsible for the data described here. Questions or requests about your data go to privacy@whatiscysticacne.com.
What we record
- Visit counts: the pages you view, the page that sent you here, how long you stay, how far down you scroll, which links and buttons you press, and basic device facts such as screen size, browser language and time zone.
- The pimple, nodule or cyst check: your answers stay in your browser. Only the match it shows travels along in the analysis link, and only if you press that link.
- Server logs: our host keeps IP addresses, browser types and requested pages so the site stays safe and online.
How the counting works
Visit counts are sent from your browser to an address on this site, /api/sight. Our server forwards them to an analytics provider (EU) that keeps them inside the European Union. Your IP address goes along so a rough location can be estimated. A random code held in session storage links the pages of a single visit and vanishes when the tab closes, so two visits cannot be joined up. We set no cookies for this. If you visit from the EU, nothing is counted until you press "Allow".
The analysis link
"Start my analysis" and the other analysis links pass through whatiscysticacne.com/lump-check on their way to acne.today, a separate paid service. The link tells acne.today that you came from this site, which link you pressed and, if you used the check, its match. Anything you give acne.today, such as photos, answers or payment details, is covered by its own privacy policy.
Why we are allowed to do this
- Visit counts from EU visitors: your consent. Change it whenever you like through "Statistics choice" at the foot of the home page.
- Visit counts from everyone else, and server logs: our legitimate interest in a site that is safe and works properly.
- Emails you send us: so we can reply.
What your browser stores
| Name | What it does | How long |
|---|---|---|
| wqCount | Your answer to the visit count question. Local storage, never sent anywhere. | Until you clear it |
| wqShade | Light or dark mode, if you pick one. Local storage. | Until you clear it |
| wqDock | Remembers that you closed the bottom bar. Session storage. | Until the tab closes |
| wq.v, wq.t, wq.c, wq.z | Random visit code, visit start and page count for the visit counts. Session storage, not cookies. | Until the tab closes |
How long we keep it
Server logs: 90 days at most. Emails: as long as we need to help you, and never longer than two years.
Who else gets it
Only the analytics provider and our host, each limited to what its task needs. We never sell data.
